My name is Michael Black, and as a recovering addict, I did one of the scariest things I have ever done in January of 2017. I was prepping for the Arnold Sports Festival and I relapsed. The relapse wasn't long, but as any other addict knows, the disease takes its grip back on one's life very quickly. I went back to detox and then treatment the last week of February. I got out of treatment, and two days later I got my new best friend. Her name is Raiden and at the time she was a small Rottweiler puppy. Before that relapse I worked the 12 steps through NA, I went to plenty of meetings and loved it but there was still something missing. I quickly found out it was the spirituality the woods and mountains here in North Carolina gave me. Raiden and I spent every day I had off from work in the mountains exploring. I always had NA, and powerlifting but when I began to gain spirituality through the Blue Ridge Parkway, my life truly felt at peace and I found the serenity that I had heard people talk about in the meetings. To any person recovering of anything, whether you were an IV Heroin user or someone who just feels alone, know that there is always hope and love and sometimes you just have to get the fuck outside. If it can work for me, it can work for anyone.
